Dr Mary Hickson SRD DipADP,
Research dietician and gastroenterologist

Dr Mary Hickson qualified in 1989 as a dietitian. She is currently a Therapy Research Lead at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust & Honorary Senior Lecturer, Imperial College London. Dr Hickson ran the recently published study on the use of probiotics to prevent antibiotic association diarrhoea (Hickson et al, 2007, BMJ, 335).

Mary has worked in the field of nutritional care of elderly people since 1993. In 1998, she began a study to investigate ways to improve nutritional care on acute elderly medicine wards, which lead to a PhD in 2002 with Imperial College. She continues to carry out research in the fields of nutrition and elderly care, hospital food and probiotics.

 

Professor Glenn Gibson,
Professor of Food

Microbial Sciences at Reading University

Glenn R. Gibson, PhD, is Professor of Food Microbial Sciences and Head of the Food and Microbial Sciences Research Unit at the University of Reading, Reading, United Kingdom. His previous posts were as Head of Microbiology, Institute of Food Research, Reading, and Research Scientist at MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, Cambridge. He has published more than 300 research articles, 10 patents, and 5 books on gut microbiology. He gives an average of 40 science lectures at international conferences each year and sits on five advisory panels in Europe and the United States, two of which he chairs. His main research interest is the role of human bacteria in health and disease.
