Probiotics and Clostridium Difficile
A recent scientific study conducted at Hammersmith Hospital in London and published in the British Medical Journal in July 2007 reported that, for the over 50s, drinking Actimel (which contains L. casei Imunitass®) twice a day while on antibiotics in hospital significantly reduced the incidence of all diarrhoea by 22% and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea by 17%.
This was the first trial to demonstrate a preventative effect of probiotic drinks containing L.casei Imunitass® on C.difficile. The research cited evidence that estimated the product cost to prevent one case of C.difficile-associated diarrhoea to be £60 compared to an average cost of treating a patient of £4,000.22
