Probiotics and diarrhoea in young children

Research studies have shown that consuming this strain of probiotic significantly reduces the duration of episodes of diarrhoea, according to a study involving young children attending day care centres
in France.12

The first six-month study randomly assigned 287 children between three and 36 months old to one of three groups: yogurt, jellied milk or milk fermented with L. casei Imunitass®. The study was conducted over a period of six months in the winter when epidemics of gastroenteritis are common.

Although the incidence of diarrhoea episodes did not differ significantly between the groups, the duration of each episode of diarrhoea was significantly shorter in the Actimel group.

Following the first study in the day care centres, another was conducted in France in 928 children between six and 24 months, which showed that this strain of probiotic was superior to standard yogurt in reducing the incidence of diarrhoea.13
