Probiotics and irritable bowel syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal tract disorder that can be identified through many symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation and abdominal distension. IBS has several different causes. Probiotics may possibly target one or more of these, and may improve the symptoms of IBS.18
In a study on the effect of Bifidobacterium animalis DN-173 010 (the scientific name for Bifidus Actiregularis™, the probiotic found exclusively in Activia yogurt) on the health-related quality of life and symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome in adults in primary care, it was found that people with feelings of digestive discomfort felt better after eating Activia.
The study suggests a beneficial effect of Activia on reporting of discomfort and bloating in constipation-predominant IBS, and on stool frequency in those people with less than three stools a week.19
The unique culture Bifidus Actiregularis™,
is scientifically proven to help improve slower digestive transit. It works alongside the good bacteria in the gut when at least one pot is eaten every day for 14 days as part of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle.20
